ABOUT
The work behind the build.
We work with owner-managed businesses to establish where operations are being held back by a process, a system, or the absence of one. In most cases, the resulting recommendation is a website, an online booking or ordering system, or a piece of bespoke software. The assessment comes first.
Although we do have a specialism in websites, and for most SMEs a website is normally the right outcome, the best solutions are reached through review — where the right answer could be something completely different.
We take on a small number of fixed-scope engagements at a time, each with a defined cost and timeline agreed in advance.
Many small businesses carry a problem too minor to justify a larger firm’s day rate, and too specific for an off-the-shelf platform to address, yet costly enough in time or missed business to matter. That is deliberately where Epoch operates. Working alone, and using modern development tools, makes it possible to take on engagements a larger practice could not justify.
Once an engagement is underway, we stay directly reachable by phone or email for the questions that come up as a project runs — not a fixed check-in schedule, but ongoing contact for as long as it’s needed. Working with us means working directly with the person carrying out the engagement, not through an account-management structure.
Epoch Digital Solutions Ltd was founded in 2026 and is registered in England and Wales. Its founder and managing director is Jack Johnson, a Biomedical Engineering student at the University of Exeter.

How an engagement works

Review
We will spend time examining how the business currently operates — the workflows, systems and technology already in use, and where they’re falling short. I then return with a comprehensive written review setting out findings, a proposed approach, a fixed price and a delivery date.

Build
You get a link to follow progress and a person to ask, not a ticket queue. Anything that changes the agreed scope is priced before it happens, not after.

Hand over
You get the code, the hosting and the accounts in your own name, plus a walkthrough from me. Nothing is locked to Epoch, and ongoing support is optional rather than assumed.

What we’ve built.
A shipped iOS application, two live client websites, and a diagnostic engagement for a problem too specific for either a larger firm or an off-the-shelf platform to solve — the work I’ve completed to date.
Natural language in, structured data out
LifeLog
A personal tracking app that turns plain sentences — “ran 5k, spent £12 on lunch, read for an hour” — into structured, searchable records, using a language model to do the parsing. Built end to end as sole developer: data model, parsing, iOS app and backend. Live on the App Store.

Box Chef
An ordering site for a bespoke meal-prep kitchen. Customers build a prepaid package, record allergies and medical dietary requirements once, and watch the price update as they go. Completed orders route to the kitchen for confirmation.

Il Pirondel
A family vineyard that handled visit enquiries by phone and email. We replaced that with online booking for tastings and vineyard visits, so availability and dates live on the site instead of in an inbox.

5PA Architects
A technical architecture practice with years of complex project files that were slow to index and retrieve. A full review was completed and a written report delivered, identifying the causes and setting out a proposed approach, which was presented to the MD, lead project manager and senior architectural assistant. Further work — a costed build of an internal archive-search tool — has been tendered and is currently under consideration.

CAPABILITIES
What we take on.
The four areas I most often work in. In practice, most engagements begin as a review and combine two or three of these — a website with an ordering system behind it, for example, or a review that leads to a proposed build.
Websites & ordering systems
Marketing and transactional sites — booking, ordering, prepaid credit, payments where a project needs them. Built to load quickly, to rank, and to be edited without a developer on call.
Box Chef and Il Pirondel are both this.
iOS apps
Native iOS apps from data model through to App Store review and release, built and shipped solo. Includes the unglamorous parts: subscriptions, review rejections, and the backend behind the app.
LifeLog is the current example.
AI features
Putting language models to work on one specific job — turning messy input into clean data, drafting, classifying — rather than bolting a chatbot onto a page. Scoped so you know what it costs to run.
LifeLog’s entry parser is built this way.
Review & assessment
Shorter engagements: looking at how work actually moves through a business, finding where it stalls, and scoping what should — and shouldn’t — be built. Ends in a written recommendation and a costed option.
